BUMPY provides lessons in off-road riding for children aged 7 to 16, with a minimum height of 120cm, on weekends and school holidays.
Children must be able to ride a pedal bike unassisted before commencing lessons on a motorcycle with us.
We can teach lessons on your own bike, or on one of ours. We provide overalls, boots and helmets, and our experienced Instructors can provide the best possible start to your life in off-road biking.
Starting with the basics on our tarmac training areas, you can learn all you need to progress onto our beginner, intermediate and expert areas of the Trials park.
BUMPY runs a Bronze, Silver and Gold Award scheme in off-road riding competencies, and our Instructors will help you to achieve the very best from day one.
Our Bumpy Bronze training program starts with Part 1 on the flat tarmac area, where the following elements are taught before progressing onto our off-road tracks to complete Bumpy Bronze Part 2.
Bumpy Bronze Part 1:
Turn the bike around in a small area under control, covering the front brake and with the engine off.
Start the engine exercising the proper safety procedures (neutral gear, brake etc).
Set off riding using the throttle and clutch correctly without wheel-spin or the front wheel leaving the ground (wheelie).
Ride in a clockwise and anti-clockwise circle using the throttle correctly.
Ride 90 degree bends to the left and right in a figure of eight using the throttle and brakes (if any) correctly.
Bring the bike to a stop using the throttle, FRONT brake and clutch correctly without locking the wheel (skidding).
Bring the bike to a stop using the throttle, REAR brake and clutch correctly without locking the wheel (skidding).
Emergency stop – Bring the bike to a stop using the throttle, BOTH brakes and clutch correctly without locking either wheel (skidding).
Change gear smoothly up and down the box, safely coming to a stop and finding neutral – correctly using all controls.
Ride a left and right slalom using the throttle and brakes correctly.
Ride at the side of the instructor at walking pace using the throttle, brakes (if any) and clutch correctly.
Hill start – safely move off up-hill using the throttle, brakes and clutch correctly without wheel-spin or the front wheel leaving the ground.
Descend a hill using the throttle (engine braking) and any brakes safely in the correct gear without locking either wheel (skidding).
Explained/shown how to safely pick up the bike from a fallen position.
When you pass your BUMPY Bronze Award Parts 1 & 2 you are then eligible to join our Trials Academy and progress onto Trials bikes, as part of a small group, for a number of weeks, which would save you money on 1 to 1 lessons.
Alternatively, you can continue with 1 to 1 training with an Instructor and progress onto Trials if you wish to do so.
